Covered in Roses was originally written years ago following the Las Vegas shooting, one of the most horrific incidents to date. Incessant exposure to images and reports of mass shootings like this has both numbed their repeat occurrence and bred a slow brewing terror of being “next.” Covered in Roses is an attempt to find passageway between fear of becoming the victim of such an event, and comprehension of the would-be perpetrator. Is the song guided by empathy, curiosity, or a frantic effort to regain control? Maybe all of the above.
I'm afraid it's too late
For a shift in the wind
Not a day comes too late
For the daily breaker
Watching, waiting
I wonder how, I wonder when
Covered in roses
Everything's rosy now
I'm afraid of my skin
It's a shameful display
What a way to begin
As a major stranger
Watching, waiting
I wonder how, I wonder when
Covered in roses
Everything's rosy now
I will live in the moment
I will swallow my fear
I will bury my anger like treasure
Way underground
Where the truth can't be seen
Till the heel starts to sprout
And returns to me
I'm afraid it's too soon
For the day to give in
Not a day left to lose
