Secondary Gain, the title track from the upcoming full-length (June 9), draws on the desire to stay anchored to a primarily painful feeling because it provides a secondary benefit. In the singer's case, the pain brought on from deep isolation provides a sense of ownership, control, and certitude. The accompanying video, filmed in darkness in front of the singular glow of a computer screen, plays on this duplicitous self-sabotage, as the protagonist gradually splits and contorts to a final crooked grin.
lyrics
Get a simple credit card
And everything’s just wonderful
Never care for anyone
And see how far you get when it comes back
Little lover lullaby
A stain upon your better side
How could you betray the mood
The thing that makes you you
It makes me me
Secondary gain
I’m trying to hold you in
Help me understand
What it is that holds me to your
Holds me to your
Holds me to your
Holds me to your
Hold me to your flame
